Time to Dump the Trump!

Recently, The Azara Group commented on the need for companies to diversify their boardrooms to stay in touch with a changing American population. It seems that Donald Trump needs to heed our advice since he is suffering the consequences of his actions. In the wake of his offensive anti-Latino and arguably racist statements, NBCUniversal and Macy’s are two major business partners that have severed ties with “The Donald.” Most likely, they will not be the last. The New York City Mayor’s Office is the latest partner to evaluate its relationship with the real estate mogul.
The backlash against Trump reflects the dramatic shifts taking place in the ethnic makeup of the American population. The United States now has the second largest Spanish-speaking population in the world, second only to Mexico. Regardless of your feelings towards Mexican and Latino immigrants, common sense would dictate that you would choose your words wisely when the Latino demographic represents nearly 12% of the American electorate and upwards of 15% in key swing states.
Trump has stood by his statement despite the irreparable harm it could do to his campaign and business interests. It is widely believed that Latino voters gave President Obama the edge he needed to defeat Mitt Romney in 2012. The clear takeaway is to know your audience and adapt to its needs. This does not necessarily mean compromising your principles. Rather, it simply entails being more diplomatic, sensitive, and inclusive.
At The Azara Group, we help our clients stay ahead of the curve so they can adapt to changing demographics. We help position our clients to leverage the positive benefits gained from enhancing our nation’s diversity. Understanding the makeup of the American population will ensure that you are not the one who hears “You’re Fired!” at the next board meeting. For Trump he may continue to fire himself even after he learns this painful lesson.
